What is Rhythmic Movement Training?

Rhythmic Movement Training (RMTi) is an approach used to address developmental challenges and neurological issues by focusing on movement patterns, reflex integration, and rhythmic exercises. It draws from various disciplines such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, sensory integration, and developmental psychology.

The core principle of Rhythmic Movement Training is that rhythmic movements and reflex integration exercises can positively influence brain function, sensory processing, motor coordination, and emotional regulation. By engaging in specific rhythmic movements and reflex integration activities, individuals may experience improvements in attention, focus, behavior, and overall well-being.

RMT techniques often involve rhythmic exercises that target primitive reflexes or early childhood reflexes, which are automatic movement patterns present from birth.

Ideally these reflexes emerge, develop, and integrate at a given time and lead to the development of more mature movement patterns and neurological connections.

Reflexes that do not fully develop or integrate may contribute to learning and behavioural challenges, challenges in sensory procession, motor coordination, or emotional regulation and other neuro-developmental delays.

Through targeted rhythmic movements and reflex integration activities, RMT seeks to support individuals in achieving greater functional abilities and overall neurological health
